Today I came across a new site that might spell the end of Digg and, quite possibly, for tales the end of social bookmarking altogether. Diggxchange is a new service that allows users to collaboratively exchange diggs with other users. All you need to do is register and send a few diggs out and you’ll get those diggs flooding back.

Diggxchange in action

As a site it looks pretty basic and I’ve had a few problems with loading speeds. This doesn’t fool me though. The concept seems like the next step in the spam arms race that seems to be overshadowing the internet. I expect very soon to see a site that allows exchange of diggs, reddits, stumbles, you name it, all into one.

How can they stop it?

Well basically, I don’t think they can. I’ve read quite a few understandably poisonous blog posts describing how all the users will be banned from the bookmarking sites but really it doesn’t take a genius to realise that by mixing in a few (or even a majority of) randomly selected innocent bystanders into site output you can prevent the bookmarking sites from taking action. How can you ban all the users if you will be mostly banning innocent people?

Natural evolution

I think the internet is a true expression of Darwinism. The weak shall perish and, judging from Digg’s front page content, I won’t be shedding many tears.

One of the wonderful things about this is that, as the bookmark sites die, so will those who prey on them. Just like the mammals taking over from the dinosaurs something better, something more intelligent, will rise from the ashes and inherit the netosphere.

hmm interesting but I’m sad to say that this idea has been dugg to death (pun intended). There was rockthevote and diggthis and endless more and all collapsed. Digg admins either got control or they signed up as users and found the fake diggers and banned them. This won’t last long, if at all. Digg isn’t a democracy anymore, I mean back 2-3 years ago it resembled one closely - but even then it wasn’t one. Now it’s just a mish-mash of repeated articles, and it’s increasingly becoming less about technology and more about general interest stories so as to appeal to the masses. They’re lowering the standards of the site so as to appeal to a larger audience IMO.

Um, not saying there is anything wrong with your post, etc, or should I say the content, but you state “The weak shall perish and, judging from Digg’s front page content, I won’t be shedding many tears” yet you have, right under your article heading, a “Digg it!” button! You certainly don’t mind the traffic from Digg, do you?

I don’t pretend to be be perfect Potkettle. Right now Digg is a good source of traffic and I would be silly to ignore it. I do believe it is far from an ideal solution. Personally I use stumbleupon since I prefer randomness over digg mafia stuff.

These sites have been around for a while and many people network only for the reason to exchange social bookmark reviews.

The only real difference is the diggxchange formalizes the process. Digg quality is down like you pointed out and that is because the site is mafia based and people are gaming the system.

These programs will be cracked down by Digg, or atleast I hope so.

Anyway, if there’s any noticeable effect, Digg will ban users, and if there isn’t, who cares?

Someone is always looking to beat the system. It might work for a while, when they’ll get caught.

Digg is a social thing, you have several groups of people who choose to digg something and the rest just follows. There is e.g. subvertandprofit [dot] com where you can pay for diggs, still - imo it is about the society who diggs and not the diggs themselves.
